How Do You Set Limit Mates in SolidWorks?

In this tutorial, we will learn how to set limit mates in SolidWorks. Limit mates allow you to restrict the motion of components within an assembly. This can be particularly useful when you want to prevent components from moving beyond certain limits or constraints.

Step 1: Opening the Assembly

First, open your assembly file in SolidWorks by clicking on “File” in the menu bar and selecting “Open”. Locate and select your assembly file from the file browser, then click “Open”.

Step 2: Accessing the Mates PropertyManager

To set limit mates, we need to access the Mates PropertyManager. Right-click on any component in the FeatureManager Design Tree and select “Insert Mate”. This will open the Mates PropertyManager on the left side of your screen.

Step 2.1: Selecting Components

In the Mates PropertyManager, select the components that you want to apply limit mates to. Hold down the Ctrl key and click on each component to select them. Once selected, click “Next” to proceed.2: Choosing Mate Types

In this step, you can choose different mate types depending on your requirements. For setting limit mates, we will use either Coincident or Distance mate types.

  • Coincident Mate: This mate type aligns two selected entities at a common point or edge.
  • Distance Mate: This mate type controls the distance between two selected entities.

Select either Coincident or Distance mate type based on your needs and click “Next” to proceed.3: Configuring Limit Mates

In this step, you will configure the limit mates for the selected components. The options available will depend on the mate type you chose in the previous step.

To set limits for Coincident mates:

  1. Select a Face or Plane: Choose a face or plane on one of the selected components where you want to apply the limit.
  2. Select a Mate Reference: Choose a face or plane on another component where you want to align the previously selected face or plane.
  3. Set Limits: Enter the desired values for limits in each direction (X, Y, and Z) to restrict movement. You can also select “Symmetric” to apply equal limits in both directions.

To set limits for Distance mates:

  1. Select Entities: Choose two entities on the selected components that will control the distance between them.
  2. Set Limits: Enter the desired values for minimum and maximum distances to restrict movement. You can also select “Symmetric” to apply equal limits on both sides of the distance range.

Once you have configured your limit mates, click “Next” to proceed.4: Solving Mates

The final step is to solve the mates by clicking “Next”. SolidWorks will calculate and apply the limit mates based on your configurations. If there are any issues or conflicts, SolidWorks will display error messages that you need to resolve before proceeding further.

Step 3: Testing Limit Mates

After setting up limit mates, it’s important to test them to ensure they function as intended. Move and rotate the selected components to verify that they are constrained within the defined limits. If any issues are found, you can go back to the Mates PropertyManager and make necessary adjustments.

Congratulations! You have successfully set limit mates in SolidWorks. Limit mates provide a powerful tool for controlling and restricting component motion within an assembly, allowing you to create more realistic and accurate designs.
