Where Does SketchUp Free Save Files?

If you are using SketchUp Free, you might be wondering where your files are saved. In this tutorial, we will explore the default file-saving location and how you can change it as per your preference.

Default File-Saving Location

When you create a new model or make changes to an existing one in SketchUp Free, the application automatically saves your work. By default, SketchUp Free saves files in the cloud storage provided by Trimble Connect.

Trimble Connect

Trimble Connect is a cloud-based collaboration platform that allows users to store, share, and view their SketchUp models online. It offers seamless integration with SketchUp Free, making it easy to access your files from any device with an internet connection.

Please note:

  • Saving files to Trimble Connect requires you to create a Trimble ID and sign in to your account within SketchUp Free.
  • You need an active internet connection to save and access your files on Trimble Connect.

Changing the File-Saving Location

If you prefer saving your SketchUp files locally instead of using Trimble Connect’s cloud storage, you can change the file-saving location. Here’s how:

  1. Go to the top-right corner of the SketchUp Free interface and click on your profile icon.
  2. A dropdown menu will appear. Click on “Settings. “
  3. In the “Settings” panel, locate the “File” section.
  4. Under “File,” you will find the option “Save models.” By default, it is set to “Trimble Connect.

  5. Click on the dropdown arrow next to “Trimble Connect. “
  6. You will see two options: “Trimble Connect” and “Local. “
  7. Select “Local” to change the file-saving location from cloud storage to your local device.

Choosing a Local Folder

Once you have set the file-saving location to “Local,” you can specify the folder where you want your SketchUp files to be saved. Follow these steps:

  1. Click on the “Choose Folder” button located below the file-saving options.
  2. A window will open allowing you to browse through your device’s folders.
  3. Select the desired folder where you want your SketchUp files to be saved.
  4. Click on “Open” or “Select” (depending on your operating system) to confirm your selection.

Please note:

  • The selected folder will become the default save location for all future SketchUp files in SketchUp Free until you change it again.
  • If you move or delete files from the chosen local folder outside of SketchUp Free, they will no longer be accessible within the application.

Congratulations! You now know where SketchUp Free saves files by default and how to change the file-saving location according to your preference. Whether you choose Trimble Connect’s cloud storage or a local folder, always ensure that your files are backed up regularly for added security.
