How Do I Revert to a Previous Version of SketchUp?

Are you using SketchUp and accidentally made some changes that you want to undo? Don’t worry, reverting to a previous version of SketchUp is possible. In this tutorial, we will guide you through the process step by step.

Step 1: Locate your SketchUp Backup Folder

To revert to a previous version of SketchUp, you need to locate your backup folder. By default, SketchUp creates automatic backups every time you save your file. These backups are saved in a specific directory on your computer.

On Windows:

  • SketchUp 2021 and newer: C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\SketchUp\SketchUpXXXX\SketchUp\Backup
  • SketchUp 2020 and older: C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\SketchUp\SketchUpXXXX\SketchUp\Backup

On Mac:

  • SketchUp 2021 and newer: /Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/SketchUp/SketchUp XXXX/SketchUp/Backup
  • SketchUp 2020 and older: /Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/SketchUp/SketchUp XXXX/Sketch Up/Backup

Step 2: Open the Backup Folder

Navigate to the appropriate directory based on your Sketchup version and operating system. Open the “Backup” folder to access your backup files.

Step 3: Identify the File You Want to Revert

In the backup folder, you will find numerous files with different timestamps and versions. Each file represents a backup of your SketchUp project at a specific point in time. Identify the file that contains the version you want to revert to based on the timestamp or any other relevant information.

Step 4: Restore the Backup File

Once you’ve identified the backup file you want to restore, copy it to a safe location on your computer, such as your desktop or a dedicated folder. This step ensures that you have a backup of your current file before making any changes.

Next, rename the backup file by removing the timestamp from its name. This step is optional but recommended to avoid confusion between different versions of your project.

After renaming the file, move it back to its original location, replacing the current SketchUp file. You may be prompted with a confirmation message asking if you want to replace the existing file. Confirm this action.

Step 5: Open SketchUp and Verify

Now that you’ve restored the backup file, open SketchUp and load your project. You should now see the version of your project that corresponds to the backup file you restored.

Note:

If you’re not satisfied with this version and want to revert again, repeat these steps using another backup file until you find the desired version.

Congratulations! You have successfully reverted to a previous version of SketchUp. Remember to always create regular backups of your projects to avoid losing important work in case of any unforeseen issues.
