How Do I Edit 3D Text in SketchUp?

Are you looking to add some dimension to your SketchUp models? Adding 3D text can be a great way to make your designs stand out. In this tutorial, we will guide you through the process of editing 3D text in SketchUp, so you can create stunning visuals for your projects.

Step 1: Creating 3D Text

To get started, open SketchUp and navigate to the “Tools” menu. From there, select “3D Text”.

A dialog box will appear where you can input the desired text, font, and size. Once you are satisfied with your choices, click “Place” to insert the 3D text into your model.

Step 2: Selecting and Modifying Text

Now that you have inserted the 3D text into your model, it’s time to make some modifications. To select the text, simply click on it with the Select tool. You will notice that the selected text becomes surrounded by a bounding box.

Bold: If you want to make your text bold, go to the “Entity Info” panel and check the “Bold” option under “Font”. This will instantly change the appearance of your text.

Underline: Similarly, if you want to underline your text, go to the “Entity Info” panel and check the “Underlined” option under “Font”. The selected 3D text will now have an underlined effect.

Step 3: Modifying Text Size and Positioning

If you want to adjust the size of your 3D text, select it with the Select tool and use the scale handles that appear around it. Dragging these handles will resize the text accordingly.

Note: To maintain the proportions of the text while scaling, hold down the Shift key while dragging the scale handles.

To move your 3D text to a different location, simply select it and use the Move tool. Click on the text and drag it to the desired position within your model.

Step 4: Changing Text Color

To change the color of your 3D text, select it with the Select tool and go to the “Entity Info” panel. Click on the color swatch next to “Color” and choose a new color from the color picker. This will instantly update the color of your text.

Step 5: Adding Materials and Textures

If you want to take your 3D text to the next level, you can apply materials or textures to it. To do this, select the text with the Select tool, right-click on it, and choose “Entity Info” from the context menu.

In the “Entity Info” panel, click on “Material” and choose a material or texture from SketchUp’s library. This will apply the selected material or texture to your 3D text, giving it a more realistic appearance.
