How Do You Use Path Mate in SolidWorks?

When it comes to designing assemblies in SolidWorks, one of the most powerful tools at your disposal is the Path Mate. The Path Mate allows you to create dynamic movement along a specified path, giving you the ability to simulate real-world motion and create complex assembly animations. In this tutorial, we will explore how to use the Path Mate feature effectively.

Step 1: Creating a Path

Before we can start using the Path Mate, we need to create a path for our assembly components to follow. To do this:

  1. Create a sketch on a plane or surface where you want the path to be.
  2. Use sketch tools like lines, arcs, and splines to create the desired path.
  3. Exit the sketch and save it.

Note: Make sure that your path is continuous and connected for smooth motion.

Step 2: Adding Components

Next, we need to add components to our assembly that will follow the created path:

  1. Open an existing assembly or create a new one.
  2. Select the component(s) you want to add motion to.
  3. Drag and drop them onto your assembly workspace if they are not already present.

Step 3: Applying the Path Mate

Now that we have our path and components ready, let’s apply the Path Mate:

  1. Select one of the components you want to move along the path.
  2. Navigate to the “Mates” tab in the SolidWorks Command Manager.
  3. Click on the “Path Mate” icon.
  4. In the PropertyManager, select the desired path from the drop-down menu.
  5. Choose the reference point or edge on the component that will align with the path.
  6. Adjust any additional settings like distance or offset if needed.
  7. Click “OK” to apply the Path Mate.

Step 4: Testing and Animating

Now that we have applied the Path Mate, we can test and animate our assembly:

  1. Select the assembly in the FeatureManager Design Tree.
  2. Navigate to “Motion Study” in the SolidWorks Command Manager.
  3. Create a new motion study by clicking on “New Study. “
  4. In the Motion Study tab, click on “Add Animation.”

A timeline will appear at the bottom of your screen.

  5. Select your components and drag them along the timeline to create motion sequences along your path.
    • Tips:
      • You can adjust speed and rotation by right-clicking on keyframes in the timeline and selecting properties.
