AutoCAD is a powerful software used by professionals for creating precise and detailed drawings. One important feature in AutoCAD is the ability to control the dimensions of objects in your drawings. In this tutorial, we will learn how to change the dimscale, which determines the scale of dimensions in your drawing.
Step 1: Accessing the Dimension Style Manager
To change the dimscale, we first need to access the Dimension Style Manager. There are two ways to access it:
- Method 1: Type “DIMSTYLE” in the command line and press Enter.
- Method 2: On the Home tab, go to the Annotation panel and click on the “Dimension Style” button.
Note: Both methods will open the Dimension Style Manager dialog box.
Step 2: Selecting a Dimension Style
In the Dimension Style Manager dialog box, you will see a list of available dimension styles. Select the dimension style that you want to modify by clicking on it. If you want to create a new dimension style, click on “New” and give it a name.

Step 3: Modifying Dimscale
Once you have selected or created a dimension style, click on the “Modify..” button in the Dimension Style Manager dialog box. This will open another dialog box with various tabs for modifying different aspects of your dimension style.
The Primary Units Tab:
In the Modify Dimension Style dialog box, go to the “Primary Units” tab. Here, you will find a section called “Scale for Dimension Features.” In this section, you can modify the dimscale value.
Important: The dimscale value is a multiplier that determines the scaling of dimensions in your drawing. For example, if the dimscale is set to 0.5, all dimensions will be reduced by half their original size. If the dimscale is set to 2, all dimensions will be doubled in size.
Enter your desired dimscale value in the “Overall scale” field and click “OK” to apply the changes.
Step 4: Applying the Modified Dimension Style
After modifying the dimscale, you need to apply the changes to your drawing. To do this, follow these steps:
- Select any existing dimension objects that you want to update with the modified dimension style.
- Right-click and choose “Properties.”
- In the Properties palette, look for “Current Dimension Style.”
- If it does not display your modified dimension style name, click on it and select your modified dimension style from the list.
Note: If you want all future dimensions to use your modified dimension style automatically, make sure to set it as the current dimension style before creating any new dimensions.
