Creating a Cut List in SketchUp
SketchUp is a powerful 3D modeling software that allows you to create detailed models of objects and structures. Whether you’re building furniture, cabinetry, or any other project that requires precise measurements, having a cut list can help streamline the construction process. In this tutorial, we will walk you through the steps of creating a cut list in SketchUp.
Step 1: Design your project
Before you can create a cut list, you need to design your project in SketchUp. Use the various tools and features available to create an accurate model of your object or structure. Make sure to include all the necessary dimensions and details.
Step 2: Organize your components
To create an efficient cut list, it’s important to organize your model into components. Components are like reusable objects that can be easily copied and modified. By organizing your model into components, you can easily generate a cut list for each individual component.
Tip: To create a component in SketchUp, select the desired geometry or group of geometry, right-click, and choose “Make Component” from the context menu.
Step 3: Assign materials
Assigning materials to your components is crucial for generating an accurate cut list. Each material represents a different type of material or stock size that will be used for construction. For example, if you’re building furniture with different types of wood, assign each component with its respective material.
Tip: To assign materials in SketchUp, select the desired component or group of components, open the “Entity Info” window (Window > Entity Info), and choose the desired material from the drop-down menu.
Step 4: Generate a report
Once you have organized your model into components and assigned materials to each component, it’s time to generate a report. SketchUp has a built-in feature called “Generate Report” that allows you to create a cut list based on your model.
To access the Generate Report feature, go to “Window” in the menu bar, then select “Model Info.” In the Model Info window, click on the “Statistics” tab, and then click on the “Generate Report” button. A new dialog box will appear.
Step 5: Customize your report
In the Generate Report dialog box, you can customize your report by selecting which attributes you want to include. You can choose from a variety of options such as component name, quantity, material, volume, and more. Select the desired options and click on the “Generate Report” button to generate your cut list.
Step 6: Export and format your cut list
After generating your cut list, you can export it as an HTML or CSV file for further formatting or printing. The HTML format allows you to easily incorporate styling elements such as bold text, underlined text, lists, and subheaders.
Tip: To export your cut list as an HTML file in SketchUp, go to “File” in the menu bar and select “Export > Reports..” Choose a location to save your file and select HTML as the file format.
Step 7: Format and print
Once you have exported your cut list as an HTML file, open it in a web browser or a text editor that supports HTML formatting. Use HTML tags like for bold text, for underline text,
- and
- for lists, and

for subheaders where applicable. Customize the styling elements according to your preference.
Finally, print out your formatted cut list or save it as a PDF for easy reference during construction.
With these simple steps, you can easily create a cut list in SketchUp to streamline your woodworking or construction projects. By organizing your model into components, assigning materials, and generating a report, you can ensure accurate measurements and efficient construction. So, start using SketchUp’s powerful tools today and take your projects to the next level!
