In this tutorial, we will learn how to export to scale in SketchUp. Exporting to scale is important when you want to accurately represent your design in other software or when you need precise measurements for fabrication.
Step 1: Set up your model
Before exporting, it’s essential to set up your model correctly by ensuring that it is accurately scaled. To do this, go to the “Window” menu and select “Model Info.” In the “Units” tab, choose the appropriate unit system and set the precision according to your project requirements.
Step 2: Adjust the view
Next, adjust your view in SketchUp so that it displays the desired area or object you want to export. Use the orbit, pan, and zoom tools to position and frame your model accordingly.
Tip:
If you want to export a specific section of your model, consider using SketchUp’s section plane tool. This will allow you to define a cutting plane and only export what’s visible within that section.
Step 3: Select the desired scale
To export your model at a specific scale, go to the “File” menu and select “Export” > “2D Graphic.” Choose an appropriate file format such as PNG or JPEG.
Note: SketchUp does not have an option for directly exporting scaled files like CAD software. However, we can use a workaround by adjusting the output resolution based on our desired scale.
Example:
If you want to export at a 1:50 scale (1 unit in SketchUp equals 50 units in reality), make sure your output resolution is set accordingly. For instance, if you want a 1000mm wide export, set the output resolution to 50 pixels per millimeter (1000mm x 50 = 50,000 pixels wide).
Step 4: Export options
Before finalizing your export, check the available options in the export dialog box. You may have options for line weight, anti-aliasing, and background color. Adjust these settings according to your requirements.
Step 5: Export
After selecting your desired options, click “Export” and choose a location to save your file. Give it an appropriate name and click “Save.”
Step 6: Verify the scale
To ensure that your exported file is correctly scaled, open it in an image editing software or import it into another CAD program. Measure a known distance in the exported image and compare it with the actual dimensions.
Troubleshooting:
If you find that the exported image is not accurately scaled, double-check your settings in SketchUp. Verify that both your model and export resolution are set correctly.
- TIP: SketchUp Pro users have access to a feature called “LayOut,” which allows for more precise control over exporting to scale. If you have access to LayOut, consider using it for exporting architectural drawings or other technical documentation.
- TIP: When exporting images for presentations or marketing purposes, consider using higher resolutions to achieve better visual quality.
Congratulations! You now know how to export to scale in SketchUp. Remember to always double-check your settings and verify the accuracy of your exported files before sharing them with others.
