In this tutorial, we will learn how to extend a wall to the roof in Sketchup. This can be a handy technique when you want to create a continuous vertical surface without any gaps or breaks between the wall and the roof.
Step 1: Select the Wall
First, we need to select the wall that we want to extend. To do this, simply click on the wall with the Select tool (shortcut: Spacebar).
Step 2: Use the Push/Pull Tool
Once you have selected the wall, activate the Push/Pull tool by clicking on its icon in the toolbar or by pressing P on your keyboard.
Step 3: Extend the Wall
To extend the wall to the roof, move your cursor over the top face of the wall until it highlights. Click once and start dragging your cursor upwards towards the roof.
Note: If you want to extend the wall by a specific distance, type in that distance after clicking on the top face.
Step 4: Adjusting and Fine-tuning
If you need to adjust or fine-tune your extension, use Sketchup’s inference points and guidelines. Inference points help you align your extension accurately with other geometry in your model.
Inference Points:
- Endpoint: Snaps to an endpoint of a line or an edge.
- Midpoint: Snaps to midpoint of a line or an edge.
- Intersection: Snaps at intersection points of lines or edges.
Guidelines:
Sketchup allows you to create guidelines to help you align and position your extension precisely. To create a guideline, select the Tape Measure tool (shortcut: T), click on a starting point, move the cursor to the desired location, and click again to set the guideline.
Step 5: Complete the Extension
After adjusting and fine-tuning your extension, click once more to complete it. Your wall should now extend seamlessly to the roof.
Tip: If you want to create multiple extensions from one wall, simply repeat Steps 1-5 for each extension.
Congratulations! You have successfully extended a wall to the roof in Sketchup. This technique can be used in various architectural projects where continuous vertical surfaces are required.
Note: If you want to make changes or remove an extension, use the Eraser tool (shortcut: E) and click on the extended face of the wall. This will remove the extension and leave you with just the original wall.
Remember to save your work regularly so that you don’t lose any progress. Have fun exploring Sketchup’s powerful tools!
