In this tutorial, we will learn how to reattach a dimension in SolidWorks. Sometimes, while working on a design, you may accidentally detach a dimension from its associated entity. This can be frustrating, but fear not – SolidWorks provides an easy way to reattach dimensions.
Step 1: Select the Dimension
To reattach a dimension, start by selecting the detached dimension. You can do this by clicking on the dimension with the left mouse button.
Step 2: Right-Click and Choose ‘Edit Dimension’
After selecting the dimension, right-click on it to open the context menu. From the menu options, choose ‘Edit Dimension’. This will open the dimension properties window.
Step 3: Modify the Value
In the dimension properties window, you can modify the value of the dimension if necessary. However, for reattaching a detached dimension, we don’t need to change its value. We only need to reattach it to its original entity.
Step 4: Click ‘OK’
Once you have opened the dimension properties window and made any necessary changes (if applicable), click on the ‘OK’ button to apply them and close the window.
Step 5: Click on the Entity
Now that you have closed the dimension properties window, move your cursor over the entity from which you originally detached the dimension. Left-click on that entity with your mouse to attach/reassociate the selected dimension with it.
Note:
If you are unable to click and attach/reassociate the dimension to an entity, make sure that your sketch is fully defined. An underdefined sketch may prevent dimensions from being attached properly.
Step 6: Verify the Dimension Reattachment
After attaching/reassociating the dimension, you should see it snap back into place on the entity. You can verify that the dimension has been successfully reattached by checking its position on the entity.
Tips:
- If you have multiple dimensions detached, repeat these steps for each dimension individually.
- Make sure to check for any geometric relationships that may be affecting the reattachment process. Sometimes, other sketch elements or relations can interfere with reattaching dimensions.
- If you’re having difficulty reattaching a dimension, try zooming in on the area and ensuring that your cursor is precisely over the entity.
That’s it! You have successfully reattached a dimension in SolidWorks. By following these simple steps, you can quickly fix detached dimensions and ensure your designs are accurate and well-defined.
