How Do I Record a Scene in Sketchup?

Are you looking to record a scene in Sketchup? Whether it’s for a presentation, tutorial, or simply to showcase your design, recording a scene can be a great way to bring your Sketchup models to life. In this tutorial, we will walk you through the step-by-step process of recording a scene in Sketchup, so let’s get started!

Step 1: Setting up the Scene

Before we start recording, it’s essential to set up the scene properly. Make sure you have the desired camera angle and perspective set up in Sketchup.

You can navigate around the model using the Orbit tool (View > Orbit) and zoom in or out using the Zoom tool (View > Zoom). Adjust the position and field of view until you are satisfied with the view.

Step 2: Configuring Camera Views

To create multiple camera views for your scene, go to Camera > Standard Views. Here you will find various predefined views such as Top, Front, Back, Left, Right.

Click on each view that you want to include in your recording. You can also create custom camera views by positioning your model and going to Camera > New Camera. Give each camera view a descriptive name to make it easier to work with later.

Step 3: Adding Animation Scenes

In order to record a sequence of camera views smoothly transitioning from one scene to another, we need to add animation scenes. To do this, go to Window > Animation.

The Animation dialog box will appear. Click on the ‘+’ button at the bottom-left corner of the dialog box to create a new animation scene.

Note:

  • Make sure that the “Scene” option is selected in the Animation dialog box.
  • By default, Sketchup sets the transition time to 1 second. You can adjust this duration according to your preference.

Repeat the above step for each camera view you want to include in your recording. You can also set different transition times between scenes to control the speed of the animation.

Step 4: Previewing and Refining the Animation

To preview your animation, click on the Play button in the Animation dialog box. This will play through your recorded scenes, showing how they transition from one camera view to another. If you are not satisfied with any part of the animation, you can go back and make adjustments.

To refine your animation, select a specific scene in the Animation dialog box and use the camera tools mentioned earlier to make any necessary adjustments to that scene. Once you are done refining a scene, select the next scene and repeat this process until you are satisfied with each individual scene.

Step 5: Exporting as Video

Once you have completed all of your scenes and are happy with how they transition, it’s time to export your animation as a video file. To do this, go to File > Export > Animation.

Choose a destination folder and specify a filename for your video. Select a video format (e.g., AVI or MP4) and click on Export.

Note:

  • The export process may take some time depending on the length and complexity of your animation.
  • You can adjust additional settings such as frame rate and resolution in the Export Options dialog box before exporting.

Congratulations! You have successfully recorded a scene in Sketchup.

Now you can use the exported video file to showcase your design, share it with others, or incorporate it into your presentations or tutorials. Experiment with different camera views and transitions to create captivating and dynamic scenes that bring your Sketchup models to life.
