How Do You Connect Lines in SketchUp?

Connecting lines in SketchUp is an essential technique that allows you to create complex and detailed 3D models. Whether you are designing a building, furniture, or any other object, knowing how to connect lines efficiently can greatly enhance your modeling workflow. In this tutorial, we will explore different methods to connect lines in SketchUp and achieve seamless geometry.

Using the Line Tool

The Line tool in SketchUp is the fundamental tool for creating edges or lines. To connect lines using this tool, follow these steps:

  1. Select the Line Tool: In the toolbar on the left side of the screen, click on the Line tool icon. Alternatively, you can press the ‘L’ key on your keyboard as a shortcut.
  2. Click to Start Drawing: Click on a point in your model where you want to start drawing a line.
  3. Move and Click Again: Move your mouse to another point where you want to end the line and click once more. This will create a new line connected to the previous one.

Note: You can use this method to connect multiple lines by continuing to click on new points after each line segment.

Moving Existing Lines

If you have existing lines that are close together but not connected, you can easily move them into position and merge them using these steps:

  1. Select the Move Tool: Click on the Move tool icon (shortcut: ‘M’) in the toolbar.
  2. Select Lines: Click on one of the lines you want to move.
  3. Move Lines: Drag the selected line to the endpoint of another line you want to connect it with.
  4. Release Mouse Button: Release the mouse button to drop the line into position, connecting it with the other line.

Using the Eraser Tool

If you have overlapping lines that need to be connected, you can use the Eraser tool in combination with the Line tool to achieve this:

  1. Select the Eraser Tool: Click on the Eraser tool icon (shortcut: ‘E’) in the toolbar.
  2. Erase Overlapping Lines: Click and drag the eraser over the overlapping lines. This will remove them from your model.
  3. Select Line Tool: Click on the Line tool icon (shortcut: ‘L’).
  4. Connect Endpoints: Click on each endpoint of the lines you want to connect. SketchUp will automatically create a new line connecting them.

Filling Gaps with Faces

Sometimes, you may have two or more lines that form a gap or an open area. To connect these lines and create a face, follow these steps:

  1. Select Line Tool: Click on the Line tool icon (shortcut: ‘L’).
  2. Create New Lines: Click on each endpoint of the existing lines to create new connecting lines. These new lines should close off any gaps in your geometry.
  3. Select Face Tool: Click on the Face tool icon (shortcut: ‘F’) in the toolbar.
  4. Select Edges: Click on the edges that form the closed shape you want to fill with a face.
  5. Create Face: Click on the selected edges to create a face that connects and fills the gap.

By utilizing these methods, you can easily connect lines in SketchUp and create complex and accurate models. Experiment with different techniques to find what works best for your specific project. Happy modeling!
