Curving a tube in SketchUp can be a bit tricky if you’re not familiar with the right techniques. However, fear not! In this tutorial, we will walk you through the step-by-step process of curving a tube in SketchUp, so you can add some smooth and organic shapes to your designs.
Getting Started
If you haven’t already, make sure to download and install SketchUp on your computer. Once you have it up and running, follow these simple steps:
Step 1: Create a Tube Shape
To get started with curving a tube, we first need to create a basic tube shape. To do this, select the “Rectangle” tool from the toolbar and draw a rectangle on your workspace. You can specify the dimensions of the rectangle by typing in the desired width and height values in the measurement box at the bottom right corner of the screen.
Note: Keep in mind that this rectangle will serve as the cross-section of your tube shape.
Step 2: Offset the Rectangle
Next, we need to offset the rectangle to give it some depth. Select the “Offset” tool from the toolbar and click on one edge of your rectangle.
Drag your mouse to create an offset line parallel to that edge. Specify the desired offset distance by typing in a value in the measurement box.
Note: The offset distance will determine how thick or thin your tube will be.
Step 3: Create Curved Edges
In order to curve our tube shape, we need to create curved edges. Select one of the long edges of your offset rectangle and activate the “Arc” tool from the toolbar.
Click on one corner of your rectangle and drag your mouse to create an arc. Repeat this process for the other corner of the same edge.
Note: The curvature of the arcs will determine how smooth or sharp the curve of your tube will be.
Step 4: Connect the Curved Edges
Now that we have our curved edges, it’s time to connect them and create a closed tube shape. Select the “Line” tool from the toolbar and click on one corner of your first arc.
Continue clicking on each subsequent arc corner until you reach the starting point of your first arc. This will create a polyline connecting all the arcs together.
Note: Make sure to close the polyline by clicking on the starting point to form a closed loop.
Step 5: Push/Pull
We’re almost there! Now, select the “Push/Pull” tool from the toolbar and click on any face of your tube shape. Drag your mouse upwards or downwards to extrude the face and give your tube some depth.
Congratulations!
You have successfully curved a tube in SketchUp! Feel free to experiment with different shapes, sizes, and curvatures to add more complexity and uniqueness to your designs.
