How Do You Edge Flange in SolidWorks?

Do you want to learn how to edge flange in SolidWorks? Well, you’ve come to the right place!

In this tutorial, we’ll walk through the step-by-step process of creating an edge flange using SolidWorks. So, let’s get started!

What is an Edge Flange?

An edge flange is a feature in SolidWorks that allows you to create a flange along an edge of a sheet metal part. It is commonly used in the design of brackets, enclosures, and other sheet metal components.

Step 1: Open SolidWorks

If you haven’t already done so, open SolidWorks on your computer. Once it’s open, create a new part file or open an existing one that you’d like to work with.

Step 2: Create a Sketch

In order to create an edge flange, we first need to create a sketch on the face where we want the flange to be. To do this, navigate to the “Sketch” tab and select “Sketch” from the dropdown menu.

Pro Tip:

If you want your text or dimensions to stand out in your sketch, you can use the Bold text style. To do this, select the text or dimension and click on the “B” icon in the formatting toolbar.

Step 3: Draw a Profile

Now that we have our sketch created, it’s time to draw our profile for the edge flange. You can use various sketch tools such as lines, arcs, rectangles, and circles to create your desired shape.

Pro Tip:

If you want certain portions of your sketch to be emphasized, you can use the Underline text style. To do this, select the text and click on the “U” icon in the formatting toolbar.

Step 4: Activate the Edge Flange Tool

Once you have your profile sketch completed, navigate to the “Sheet Metal” tab and click on the “Edge Flange” tool. This will activate the edge flange feature.

Step 5: Define Parameters

After activating the edge flange tool, SolidWorks will prompt you to define various parameters for your flange. These parameters include material thickness, bend radius, and flange length. Enter the desired values based on your design requirements.

Pro Tip:

If you want to highlight a list of important points or steps, you can use an Unordered List. To do this, wrap your list items with “

    ” and “

” tags, and each item with “

  • ” and “
  • ” tags.

    • Ensure that the “Direction 1” option is selected as it determines which side of the profile sketch the flange will be created on.
    • You can also adjust additional parameters such as relief shape and size if needed.

    Step 6: Preview and Complete

Once you have defined all the required parameters for your edge flange, click on “Preview” to see a preview of how your flange will look. If everything looks good, click on “OK” to complete the edge flange feature.

    Congratulations!

You have successfully created an edge flange in SolidWorks! You can now further modify or edit the flange using additional tools and features available in SolidWorks.

Remember to save your work regularly to avoid losing any progress. Practice creating edge flanges on different parts to improve your skills. Happy designing!
