How Do You Make a Curved Dome in Sketchup?

In Sketchup, creating a curved dome can add an interesting element to your architectural designs or 3D models. It can be a bit tricky to create a perfect curved dome, but with a few steps and the right techniques, you can achieve stunning results. In this tutorial, we will walk through the process of creating a curved dome in Sketchup.

Step 1: Start with a Circle

To begin, open Sketchup and select the “Circle” tool from the toolbar on the left side of your screen. Click once to set the center point of your circle and then drag outwards to adjust the size. Hold down the “Shift” key while dragging to ensure that your circle remains perfectly round.

Tip: You can also type in specific dimensions for your circle by clicking on the value input box at the bottom-right corner of your screen.

Step 2: Create a Curved Line

Next, select the “Arc” tool from the toolbar. Click once on the edge of your circle to set one endpoint of your arc.

Then, move your cursor towards the center of the circle and click again to set another endpoint. Dragging your cursor will adjust the curvature of your arc.

Note: The length of this curved line will determine the height or depth of your dome.

Step 3: Extrude Your Curve

Select both your circle and curved line by clicking and dragging a selection box around them, or by using the “Select” tool while holding down the “Shift” key. Right-click on either shape and choose “Intersect Faces” > “With Selection.” This will merge both shapes into one.

Tips:

  • Make sure your circle and arc intersect properly. If they don’t, try adjusting the position or length of your arc until they intersect at the desired point.
  • Experiment with different curve lengths for different dome shapes. Longer curves will create shallower domes, while shorter curves will create taller domes.

Step 4: Push and Pull

Select the newly created shape (the merged circle and curve) using the “Select” tool. Then, right-click on it and choose “Push/Pull.” Click once on the surface of your shape, move your cursor upwards, and click again to extrude it into a 3D dome shape.

Tips:

  • Hold down the “Ctrl” key while pushing or pulling to create a copy of your dome instead of modifying the original shape.
  • Adjust the height of your dome by typing in specific dimensions in the value input box at the bottom-right corner of your screen.

Step 5: Fine-tune Your Dome

Your curved dome is now complete! However, you can further refine its appearance by adding more details or modifying its shape. Use tools like “Move,” “Rotate,” or “Scale” to adjust specific parts of your dome according to your design requirements.

Tips:

  • Add texture or materials to give your dome a realistic look. Right-click on any face of your dome, choose “Texture” > “Position,” and select an image file from your computer to apply it.
  • Create multiple domes and arrange them together to build a larger structure, such as a cathedral or an observatory.

With these steps, you can now create stunning curved domes in Sketchup. Experiment with different sizes and shapes to achieve the desired effect for your architectural or 3D modeling projects. Happy designing!
