How Do You Make a Solid Cube in SketchUp?

Creating a solid cube in SketchUp is a fundamental skill that every 3D modeler should master. In this tutorial, we will guide you through the step-by-step process of creating a perfect cube using SketchUp’s powerful tools. So, let’s dive right in!

Getting Started

Before we begin, make sure you have SketchUp installed on your computer. If you don’t have it yet, head over to the official SketchUp website and download the latest version for your operating system.

Step 1: Launching SketchUp

Once you have SketchUp installed, launch the application by double-clicking on its icon. You will be greeted with a blank workspace.

Step 2: Drawing the Base Square

To create a cube, we first need to draw a square as the base. Let’s start by selecting the Polygon tool from the toolbar on the left side of your screen.

Note: If you can’t find the Polygon tool, click on View, then Toolbars, and make sure ‘Large Tool Set’ is selected.

After selecting the Polygon tool, click once anywhere on your workspace to bring up its options dialog box. In this dialog, enter ‘4’ in the sides field and press Enter.

A square will now be visible on your workspace. To resize it, click and drag one of its edges while holding down the Shift key. This ensures that all sides remain equal in length.

Tips:

  • To lock an axis:
  • If you want to constrain the movement of your cursor to a specific axis while resizing, simply press Arrow Up for the blue axis (up and down), Arrow Right for the red axis (left and right), and Arrow Left for the green axis (front and back).

  • To enter specific dimensions:
  • If you want precise control over the size of your square, you can type in the desired dimensions in the VCB (Value Control Box) at the bottom-right corner of your screen. For example, if you want a square with sides measuring 5 inches, type ‘5″‘.

Step 3: Extruding the Square

Now that we have our base square, we can extrude it to create a three-dimensional cube. To do this, select the Push/Pull tool from the toolbar.

To use the Push/Pull tool:

  1. Select the tool from the toolbar.
  2. Click on one of the faces of your square.
  3. Drag your cursor upwards to extrude it into a cube.
  4. If you want to specify an exact height, type in the desired value using VCB and press Enter.

Congratulations!
