How Do You Make an Ovoid in SketchUp?

Creating an ovoid shape in SketchUp is a great way to add variety and visual interest to your 3D models. Whether you’re designing organic forms or simply want to experiment with different shapes, learning how to create an ovoid can expand your creative possibilities. In this tutorial, we’ll explore the step-by-step process of making an ovoid in SketchUp.

Step 1: Open SketchUp

To begin, open SketchUp on your computer. If you don’t have it installed already, you can download it from the official website and follow the installation instructions.

Step 2: Create a New Project

Once SketchUp is open, create a new project by clicking on “File” in the top menu bar and selecting “New”. This will provide you with a blank canvas to work on.

Step 3: Draw a Circle

To create an ovoid shape, we’ll start by drawing a circle. Select the “Circle” tool from the toolbar on the left or press the “C” key on your keyboard as a shortcut. Click anywhere on the canvas to set the center point of the circle and then drag your mouse outward to specify its radius.

Note: Hold down the Shift key while dragging to ensure that your circle remains perfectly round.

Step 4: Scale the Circle

To transform our circle into an ovoid, we need to scale it along one axis. Select the “Scale” tool from the toolbar or press the “S” key as a shortcut. Click once on one of the edges of your circle to set it as the scaling reference point.

Note: You can use inference points to ensure accurate scaling. Hover over the edge of the circle until you see a dotted line indicating the midpoint, then click to set the reference point.

After setting the reference point, move your mouse away from the circle and click again to define the scaling direction. Drag your mouse outward or inward to scale the circle along that axis until you achieve the desired ovoid shape.

Step 5: Smooth the Ovoid

To give our ovoid a smoother appearance, we can use SketchUp’s “Follow Me” tool. Select the “Follow Me” tool from the toolbar or press the “F” key as a shortcut.

Note: The “Follow Me” tool allows you to extrude a shape along a path. In this case, we’ll use it to smooth out our ovoid by extruding it along a circular path.

Create another circle on your canvas that intersects with your ovoid shape. This new circle will act as our path for smoothing. Select both the ovoid and the circle path by clicking and dragging your mouse over them.

With both shapes selected, activate the “Follow Me” tool again and click on the circular path. SketchUp will automatically extrude your ovoid shape along this path, resulting in a smooth, curved surface.

Step 6: Fine-tune Your Ovoid

Now that you have created an ovoid in SketchUp, you can further refine it by editing its dimensions or adding additional details. Use tools like “Push/Pull”, “Move”, or “Rotate” to modify your ovoid according to your design requirements.

Tips for Creating Ovoids in SketchUp:

  • Experiment with different base shapes: Instead of starting with a circle, try using other base shapes like rectangles or polygons to create unique ovoid shapes.
  • Combine multiple ovoids: Explore the possibilities of combining multiple ovoids to create complex forms or patterns.
  • Use plugins: SketchUp offers a wide range of plugins that can enhance your modeling capabilities. Look for plugins specifically designed for creating organic shapes.

Now that you’ve learned the process of creating an ovoid in SketchUp, take some time to experiment and apply this knowledge to your own projects. With practice, you’ll be able to incorporate ovoid shapes seamlessly into your designs, adding a touch of uniqueness and creativity.

Happy modeling!
