How Do You Program Mouse Buttons in SketchUp?

SketchUp is a powerful 3D modeling software that allows users to create and manipulate 3D models with ease. One of the many features that make SketchUp stand out is its ability to customize mouse buttons, allowing users to streamline their workflow and increase efficiency. In this tutorial, we will explore how to program mouse buttons in SketchUp.

Step 1: Accessing the Preferences

To begin, open SketchUp and navigate to the “Window” menu at the top. From the dropdown menu, select “Preferences.” This will open the Preferences dialog box.

Step 2: Navigating to the Mouse section

In the Preferences dialog box, locate and click on the “Shortcuts” option on the left-hand side. This will display a list of available shortcuts and their associated commands.

Step 3: Customizing Mouse Buttons

To program a mouse button, select a desired command from the list. Once selected, click on the “Add Shortcut” button located at the bottom of the dialog box.

Next, a new window will appear asking you to press a key or combination of keys for your shortcut. This is where you can program your mouse button.

Note: Some mice have additional buttons that can be programmed specifically for use in SketchUp. If your mouse has extra buttons, they will appear as options in this window as well.

Option A: Assigning Existing Commands

  • If you wish to assign an existing command to your mouse button, simply press your desired mouse button or combination of buttons when prompted by the window mentioned above.
  • Once you press the desired mouse button, SketchUp will automatically assign the selected command to that button.

Option B: Creating Custom Commands

  • If you want to create a custom command for your mouse button, you can do so by first creating a custom shortcut.
  • To create a custom shortcut, click on the “Add Shortcut” button and enter your desired keyboard shortcut combination.
  • Once you have created the custom shortcut, assign it to your mouse button as described in Option A.

Step 4: Testing and Using Your Custom Mouse Button

After assigning a command to your mouse button, click “OK” to close the Preferences dialog box. Now, when you press your programmed mouse button or combination of buttons, the assigned command will be executed in SketchUp.

Note: Remember to save your customized shortcuts by clicking on the “Save Preferences” button in the Preferences dialog box. This ensures that your settings are retained even if you close and reopen SketchUp.

By programming your mouse buttons in SketchUp, you can streamline repetitive tasks and improve your overall workflow. Experiment with different commands and shortcuts to find what works best for you. Happy modeling!
