Where Is PDF Underlay in AutoCAD?

AutoCAD is a powerful software used by professionals in the architecture, engineering, and construction industries for creating precise and detailed drawings. One of the useful features in AutoCAD is the ability to add PDF underlays to your drawings.

However, finding the PDF underlay option can be a bit confusing at first. In this tutorial, we will guide you through the steps to locate the PDF underlay feature in AutoCAD.

Step 1: Accessing the Insert Tab

To begin, open your AutoCAD software and locate the ribbon at the top of the screen. The ribbon contains various tabs that provide access to different sets of tools and features. Click on the Insert tab to proceed.

Step 2: Locating Attach and Underlay Options

After clicking on the Insert tab, you will see several different groups of tools related to inserting objects into your drawing. Look for the Create group within this tab.

The Create group contains options for attaching external files or objects as references in your drawing. Among these options, you will find two buttons that are relevant to adding PDF underlays:

  • Attach: This button allows you to attach an external reference file such as a DWG or DWF file.
  • Pdf Underlay: This button specifically enables you to add a PDF file as an underlay in your drawing.

To proceed with adding a PDF underlay, click on the Pdf Underlay button.

Step 3: Selecting Your PDF File

Once you click on the Pdf Underlay button, a dialog box will appear prompting you to select the PDF file you want to add as an underlay. Browse through your files and select the desired PDF file, then click on the Open button.

Step 4: Adjusting the Underlay Settings

After selecting your PDF file, another dialog box will appear allowing you to adjust various settings for the underlay. These settings include:

  • Scale: You can set the scale of the underlay based on your drawing’s needs. The default value is 1.
  • Rotation: You can rotate the underlay to align it with your drawing if necessary.
  • Snap Options: You can choose whether or not you want snapping enabled for the underlay.

Make sure to adjust these settings according to your requirements and preferences. Once done, click on the OK button to add the PDF underlay to your drawing.

Step 5: Positioning and Adjusting the Underlay

After adding the PDF underlay to your drawing, AutoCAD will prompt you to specify a point for insertion. Click anywhere in your drawing area to place the underlay at that location.

You can further adjust and modify the position, scale, and rotation of the underlay using AutoCAD’s editing tools. To access these tools, right-click on the added PDF underlay and select Edit Object Display.. from the context menu. This will open a dialog box where you can make changes to the underlay settings.

And that’s it! You have successfully located and added a PDF underlay in AutoCAD. This feature allows you to incorporate external PDF files into your drawings, providing additional reference and context for your designs.

Remember to save your work regularly to avoid any data loss. Now you can take advantage of this powerful feature and enhance your AutoCAD drawings with PDF underlays.
