Where Is the Rectangle Tool in SketchUp?

In SketchUp, the Rectangle tool is an essential feature that allows users to create rectangular shapes easily. Whether you are designing a floor plan, a 3D model, or just need to draw a simple rectangle, knowing how to access and use this tool is fundamental.

Locating the Rectangle Tool

The Rectangle tool can be found in the toolbar on the left side of the SketchUp interface. It is represented by an icon that looks like a rectangle.

If you cannot locate it immediately, don’t worry; it might be grouped with other similar tools. To reveal hidden tools, click on the small arrow at the bottom right corner of a tool group.

Here’s how to find and select the Rectangle tool:

  1. Launch SketchUp and open your project.
  2. Look for the toolbar on the left side of your screen.
  3. Identify the group of drawing tools that contains the Rectangle tool.
  4. Click on the small arrow at the bottom right corner of the group if necessary.
  5. Select the Rectangle tool by clicking on its icon.

Drawing Rectangles with Precision

Once you have selected the Rectangle tool, you can start drawing rectangles by clicking and dragging your mouse across your workspace. By default, SketchUp allows you to freely draw rectangles without specifying precise dimensions or proportions. However, if precision is important for your project, you can use several methods to achieve accurate results:

  • Type in exact dimensions: After selecting the Rectangle tool, click once to set one corner of your rectangle. Then, before clicking again to set its opposite corner, type in precise dimensions using your keyboard.

For example, if you want a rectangle that is 10 feet wide and 20 feet long, type “10ft, 20ft” and press Enter.

  • Use the Measurements box: In the lower-right corner of the SketchUp interface, you will find a Measurements box. After selecting the Rectangle tool, click once to set one corner of your rectangle. Then, before clicking again to set its opposite corner, enter precise dimensions in the Measurements box and press Enter.

Additional Tips for Using the Rectangle Tool

Here are some additional tips to enhance your experience with the Rectangle tool:

  • Create squares: To create a square instead of a rectangular shape, hold down the Shift key while dragging your mouse. This will constrain the proportions of your shape.
  • Draw from center: By default, SketchUp allows you to draw rectangles from one corner to another.

However, if you prefer to draw rectangles from their center point outward, press and hold down the Ctrl key (Windows) or Option key (Mac) while dragging your mouse.

  • Lock aspect ratio: If you want to maintain a specific aspect ratio while resizing a rectangle after it has been drawn, select it with the Select tool and then click on one of its corners. With the Move tool active, hold down Shift before resizing the rectangle.

The Rectangle tool in SketchUp is a versatile feature that offers flexibility and precision when creating rectangular shapes. By using this tool effectively and applying these tips and techniques, you can enhance your workflow and create accurate designs in no time!
